“I expected the venue and the catering to be expensive,” Marianne says. “But when I started getting quotes back from wedding photographers and professional DJs, I experienced total sticker shock. We are talking about millions of Rwandan Francs for a single day of work. I remember thinking, ‘They are only working for eight hours. How on earth can they justify charging a corporate executive’s monthly salary for one Saturday?'”
However, wedding industry professionals argue that most clients only see a small part of the actual work involved.
Wedding photography involves more than one day
Many people believe wedding photographers simply arrive, take pictures, and leave after the ceremony. In reality, most of the work happens before and after the wedding itself.
Professional photographers invest heavily in expensive equipment, including advanced camera bodies, lighting systems, lenses, storage devices, and editing software. In addition, they must constantly replace outdated technology to maintain high image quality.

“People don’t factor in the tech stack,” explains a veteran digital creator. “A single professional camera body loses value every year. Add in subscription fees for editing software, client gallery hosting, and premium cloud backups, and your baseline cost of doing business is massive before you even press the shutter button.”
Many photographers also spend between 40 and 60 hours handling post production work after each wedding. This includes sorting through more than 4,000 raw images, editing selected photos, and securing backups to prevent data loss.
As a result, many photographers say their prices reflect both technical investment and the pressure of delivering flawless memories.
Wedding DJs provide more than music
Similarly, many wedding DJs believe clients underestimate the complexity of professional entertainment services. Some people assume a simple playlist can replace a live DJ during a wedding reception.
However, experienced DJs argue that managing a wedding crowd requires technical skills, emotional awareness, and constant coordination.
Professional DJs invest in high quality sound systems, wireless microphones, lighting equipment, backup generators, and mixing technology. Additionally, they must understand how to maintain energy across different age groups and musical preferences.
“A wedding crowd is a logistical nightmare,” says an international event DJ. “You have grandparents who want to hear classic rumba or oldies, parents who want 80s pop, and young adults who want modern Afrobeats or hip-hop. According to entertainment professionals, couples are not simply paying for songs. Instead, they are paying for smooth coordination, crowd management, technical reliability, and emotional atmosphere.
Experts also point out that professional DJs provide services that playlists cannot offer. A Spotify playlist may create dead air between songs and fail to adapt to crowd reactions. In contrast, a skilled wedding DJ performs seamless transitions, reads audience energy live, and prevents technical audio problems during important moments.

One of the biggest reasons premium wedding vendors charge higher prices is the pressure to avoid failure at all costs. Unlike many other events, weddings cannot be repeated if something goes wrong.

Photographers often carry multiple cameras and duplicate storage devices. DJs also bring backup sound systems, extra microphones, and replacement cables to reduce risks.
Experts say this level of preparation increases business costs significantly. Nevertheless, it also provides couples with confidence and security on an emotionally important day.
“When you hire a cheap vendor, you are gambling with your memories,” Marianne reflects. “When you pay a premium price, you aren’t just paying for the beautiful photos or the great music. You are paying for the peace of mind that comes with knowing that no matter what happens, your once-in-a-lifetime moments are perfectly safe.”
Technology and expectations continue driving prices higher
Modern weddings are becoming more sophisticated as couples expect cinematic photography, social media ready videos, advanced lighting, and personalized entertainment experiences.
At the same time, inflation, technology upgrades, and increasing client expectations continue pushing vendor costs higher across the wedding industry.
While some couples now reduce spending in areas like decoration or guest lists, many still prioritize photography and entertainment because these services preserve memories long after the event ends.
Industry analysts believe the demand for premium wedding services will likely continue growing, especially among couples seeking personalized and high quality experiences.
