Marriages at risk: How false prophecies are damaging relationships

False prophecies in marriage are becoming a growing concern in many communities. While prophecy can strengthen faith, some couples face emotional stress when messages are misused. Individuals claiming exclusive divine insight can create fear and doubt in relationships, sometimes even leading to separation or divorce.

The Bible advises discernment when interpreting prophetic messages. 1 Corinthians 14:29 emphasizes, “Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others weigh carefully what is said.” Not every prophecy should be accepted without verification.

Real-life cases of false prophecies

In 2016, Mr. Akinyemi Ilesanmi and his wife, Comfort, appeared in an Agege Customary Court in Lagos, Nigeria. Their 10-year marriage faced collapse after Mr. Ilesanmi claimed a prophecy led him into the marriage.

He explained that a prophet introduced by his fiancée told him she was his wife, prompting them to marry just two weeks after meeting. Afterward, he experienced ongoing marital difficulties and health issues. Comfort denied the allegations and asked for reconciliation, emphasizing her love for him.

Evangelist Christian Ugwu, speaking to Vanguard News on June 26, 2024, warned:
“Fake prophecies are everywhere now. People are using prophecy to make money and create problems in families. They are destroying families and relationships.”

Personal testimonies from online platforms

A Reddit user shared how a prophecy ended his long-term relationship. The prophecy implied he was not the right partner, leading his girlfriend to break up with him. He wrote on December 1, 2025:
“This prophecy has ruined our relationship; she ended any hope I had with her because she believed it was God’s message.”

In Kigali, Rwanda, couples report similar challenges. False prophetic messages have created fear and tension even in marriages that survive.

Christian Nsanzumuhire and Odette Kamikazi shared:
“A prophet once told us that our marriage was under a curse and we would separate if we didn’t perform certain rituals. We didn’t follow everything, but it caused arguments and fear between us.”

Another couple, Safari Kabeza and Kevine Muhawenayo from Muhanga, recalled:
“Prophet told us that our firstborn would face serious illness unless we performed certain rituals. We didn’t follow all the instructions, but the anxiety it caused us was immense.”

Expert advice on protecting marriages

Evangelists stress that prophecy should be approached carefully, with Biblical guidance and mutual understanding. Marriages thrive when faith is combined with action, not when one partner or prophet becomes the ultimate authority in all matters.

Ugwu advises believers to test prophetic messages against Scripture and avoid relying on unverified spiritual guidance.
