A coach is not supposed to fall for a player on his own team. Yet that unwritten rule faded the day Coach Lilo noticed Gaju’s fierce game and steady determination. Their first glance grew into friendship, friendship deepened into love, and on September 21 they sealed their bond with vows, rings, and fireworks.
A Double Triumph on a Day to Remember
September 21 already buzzed with excitement as Kigali hosted the UCI World Championships. Inside Sainte Famille Hotel, however, the real celebration belonged to Gaju and Lilo’s families. Their traditional wedding, known as Gusaba no Gukwa, brought relatives and friends together for a ceremony rich with Rwandan rituals, joyful songs, and vibrant attire.
Many guests wore classic Rwandan dress, but the couple added a creative twist. Lilo, the bride’s brother, and the best man chose elegant Nigerian wedding outfits. “Rwandan attires are the best, but a blend of them and Nigerian ones makes a chef’s kiss, especially when colors are well chosen and mixed,” the couple explained.

From the Court to a Lifetime of Love
During a quiet moment Lilo described how their story began. “Not long after I started coaching her team, our friendship slowly grew through drills, workouts, wins, and losses. She was always determined and ready to put in the work, and I admired that more than she probably knew.”
He added, “Watching her drop those three- and two-point shots and seeing her smile after a win made me proud in a way I can’t explain.”
Sacred Vows at Paroisse Sainte Famille
After the traditional ceremony the celebration moved to Paroisse Sainte Famille for the religious wedding. The Five Bright Singers filled the church with rich harmonies while the priest blessed Gaju and Lilo’s union in the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony. Under the warm glow of the altar lights the couple exchanged vows and sealed their forever bond.
Gaju reflected on the day’s unique challenge. “Our wedding shared the same date as the UCI Championships. It was a hassle, but choosing one venue for all celebrations made everything easier.”
When asked what convinced her that Lilo was the one, Gaju smiled. “He became my motivation. He cares not only about me but also about my family and everything that matters to me. He has helped me grow, changed the way I see things, and brought light into my life.”
Reception Filled with Kigali Wedding Inspiration
The evening returned to Sainte Famille Hotel for a dazzling reception. Guests enjoyed modern dances, a stunning cake cutting, and fireworks that lit up the Kigali night. After a wardrobe change into majestic evening attire, the couple hosted Gutwikurura, a joyful post-wedding gathering filled with gifts and laughter.
Lilo’s most emotional moment came when the entire basketball team surprised the couple on stage holding a ball to congratulate them. “It brought me tears and reminded me of where I first met Gaju,” he said.
A Celebration Future Couples Can Learn From
Gaju and Lilo’s wedding stands out as more than a love story. Their thoughtful planning, creative fashion choices, and seamless coordination despite a citywide event offer timeless Kigali wedding inspiration. For couples planning their own day, this celebration proves that blending tradition with personal style creates memories as lasting as the vows themselves.
Wow… I don’t even know what to say except; congratulations to the newly weds. A happy marriage that is rooted in God.
Nice piece, Gisele.👏👏
