Distance means so little: How Rwandans keep love alive across borders

Love can become challenging when couples are separated by long distances. Misunderstandings, lack of communication, and insecurity often weaken relationships. Yet, American novelist Tom McNeal reminds us through his famous quote: “Distance means so little when someone means so much.” His words show that strong love can survive any distance when trust, loyalty, and commitment are present.

Many young Rwandans experience emotional struggles when living far from their partners.

Athanase Sibomana, 25, from Karongi, once worked in Rubengera while his girlfriend stayed at home. Rumors eventually destroyed their relationship.

“She asked for a break because people told her I had other girlfriends in Rubengera,” he said.

The separation created doubt, fear, and confusion. Egide Imaniranzi, 21, from Kamonyi, also faced difficulties when his girlfriend moved to Rusizi for work. Their relationship slowly weakened.

“Our love started to fade when she left. We stopped trusting each other, and she was no longer there when I needed her,” Egide explained. These stories show how easily relationships can strain when trust begins to fade.

Not all long-distance relationships fail; some grow stronger over time.

Clemance Iradukunda, 24, from Remera in Kigali, believes trust is the foundation of lasting love. She has been with her partner for more than four years, even though he lives in Uganda.

“True love is built on trust. Physical separation should not separate lovers,” Clemance said.

Esperance Umutoni, from Kicukiro, also believes love can overcome distance. Her partner lives in Kayonza, yet their bond remains strong.

“Nothing can come between us. What matters is comforting him and never doubting him,” she said. These testimonies show that love survives when couples communicate, trust each other, and stay emotionally connected.

Older generations offer valuable advice based on life experience.

Yandagije Filemon, 75, from Muhanga, shared his story with AfriWed. He worked in Nyagatare while his partner lived in Muhanga. Despite the long distance, their relationship thrived.

“True love is patient and willing to wait,” he said. His message encourages young couples to be patient, committed, and understanding in long-distance relationships.

Tom McNeal, the author of the quote, is an American novelist who writes about love and human connection. His quote appears in his novel Far Far Away, emphasizing that emotional closeness is stronger than physical distance.

Relationship experts agree that long-distance love can succeed when couples maintain trust, communicate regularly, and share common goals.

A 2018 survey by KIIROO, a technology company based in Amsterdam, found that: 58% of long-distance relationships succeed 42% fail

Researchers noted that couples who stay emotionally connected have a higher chance of remaining together. Regular communication, loyalty, and shared goals are key factors for long-term success.

Long-distance relationships are not easy. They bring insecurity, misunderstandings, and emotional stress. Yet many couples prove that love can survive separation when trust and commitment are strong.

Tom McNeal’s words continue to inspire: “Distance does not weaken true love lack of trust does.”
