Kigali, Rwanda The Emerance and Eric love story is a powerful tale of resilience and devotion. Emerance Umutoni recently exchanged vows with Ndizihiwe Eric in a ceremony that celebrated not only their union but also her remarkable triumph over illness. Their wedding, held on 8/11/2025, stood as a testament to Emerance’s unwavering strength and the unbreakable bond the couple shares.
Love at first sight is possible
Eric first saw Emerance in 2023 during a wedding one of those elegant ceremonies where guests silently judge the décor. But while everyone else focused on the decorations, Eric didn’t notice any of it. The moment she walked in, he froze. “Who is she?” he wondered, forgetting to blink.
However, courage takes time. He spent a full year practicing what he might say, typing messages, deleting them, and working up the confidence to contact the friend whose wedding he had attended the friend who unknowingly introduced him to the “Umutoni effect.”
When Eric finally asked for help “Remember that girl from your wedding?” his friend burst into laughter. But she gladly stepped in and arranged their first meeting. It was simple and natural; she casually invited them both to a hangout and pretended it was all coincidence.
Eric walked in nervous. Emmerance walked in smiling.
The moment they started talking, everything clicked.
From that day forward, they grew closer. And by the end of May 2024, they officially began dating.
The proposal: a birthday full of surprises
At the beginning of April 2025, Eric planned a proposal that matched her personality simple, sincere, and deeply heartfelt. He disguised it as a normal birthday surprise and took her out for a quiet dinner.
Afterwards, he guided her to a small setup he had prepared: soft lights, her favorite flowers, and a modest “Happy Birthday” sign that hinted at nothing more than a celebration.
Then Eric gently called her name. When she turned around, he was already on one knee.
No dramatic speech. No long pauses. Just Eric being completely himself as he said:
“I want every birthday, every year with you.”
She laughed and cried at the same time as she said YES.
When forever was tested
The first signs of trouble
Two weeks after the proposal, just when excitement should have filled her days, Emerance began experiencing strange back pains. At first, everyone assumed she was stressed or exhausted. But the pain intensified quickly. It shot down her legs, making even walking difficult.
What started as mild discomfort soon turned into fear.
The hospital struggle
Within days, they rushed her to King Faisal Hospital, where tests, uncertainty, and sleepless nights followed.
“It was one of the hardest times of my life,” Emmerance said, her voice trembling. “Sometimes the pain was so sharp that I couldn’t turn on my pillow. I cried quietly into my blanket because I didn’t want anyone to see how terrified I was.”
She recalled nights when she listened to footsteps in the hospital corridor people laughing, nurses chatting while she wondered whether she would ever feel normal again. Even sitting up felt like climbing a mountain.
The support that kept her fighting
“But what kept me going,” she said softly, “was the love around me.”
Eric visited more often than anyone. Before work, after work, early mornings, late evenings he showed up with tired eyes and a brave smile. He held her hand through the worst nights, wiped her tears, and constantly reminded her she was stronger than the illness trying to break her.
Her mother also became her lifeline, praying over her, feeding her, and refusing to leave her side. “She reminded me that I still had a future waiting,” Emmerance said. “Her strength made me fight harder.”
Eric’s silent battle
“For me, those months were the darkest I’ve ever lived,” Eric admitted. “Watching the woman I love struggle just to sit up broke me.”
Many nights, he left the hospital and cried in his car where no one could see. “I feared losing her or losing our dreams. I would have traded places with her in a heartbeat.”
But he held on. “She kept fighting, so I had to fight with her.”
A slow return to hope
After three painful months, Emerance slowly began recovering regaining strength, walking again, and reconnecting with her old self. These small victories felt like miracles.
Their wedding, originally planned for September, had to be postponed. Moving the ceremony to November gave the date even more meaning: it symbolized survival, endurance, and love that refused to give up.
From tears to vows: a journey rewritten
1. Gusaba a tradition of respect and unity
The celebrations began with the cherished Gusaba ceremony at Tedga’s Gahanga, a moment deeply rooted in Rwandan tradition. Eric’s family formally requested Emerance’s hand in marriage. Her family welcomed them warmly, exchanging blessings and gifts that honored both families and marked the beginning of unity.
2. Holy matrimony a promise sealed in faith
Their religious wedding took place at Saint Vincent in Gikondo, officiated by a priest who was also Eric’s close friend. The choir singing that day was the very choir Emerance once belonged to, filling the church with voices that carried personal meaning.
Surrounded by family and friends, they exchanged vows filled with love, devotion, and gratitude.
3. The reception a celebration of resilience
The reception at Tedga’s Gahanga radiated elegance, joy, and deep emotion. After months of fear and uncertainty, the celebration felt like a second chance at life.
“When I stepped into the hall and saw everyone smiling, I couldn’t hold back my tears,” Emmerance said. “Being surrounded by love after everything we went through made my heart overflow.”
“Watching her walk in, healthy and smiling, meant everything,” Eric said. “This wasn’t just our wedding. It was a celebration of survival, love, and hope.”
The talent behind their special day
Eric and Emerance worked with talented teams, including Paccy’s Décor, Fa Catering, Okxx Café, and Kibonke Sound System.
“Seeing every detail come together made my heart full of gratitude,” she said.
Eric added, “Everyone put so much effort and love into our day. We are forever thankful.”
